What can third graders do? By the end of third grade, look for your child to be able to:

  • Read longer stories and chapter books independently
  • Develop knowledge and vocabulary through independent reading
  • Discuss themes or messages of stories
  • Use a variety of sources to find information
  • Explore and investigate topics of interest
  • Increase vocabulary through synonyms and antonyms
  • Use context clues to get meaning when reading
  • Understand graphs and charts
  • Use information gathered and his own reasoning to evaluate explanations and opinions
  • Distinguish cause/effect, fact/opinion
  • Summarize fiction and nonfiction
  • Follow directions and instructions
  • Listen to classmates and adults without interrupting
