Alphabet Letter-Eater

For all age children who need practice in phonemic awareness.

Tell children you are going to say a word and ask them to name the beginning letter. For example, say the word smile. Ask for the beginning sound. After children have identified the /s/ sound, ask them what the word would be if an alphabet letter-eater ate the letter s. "You are right! The new word is mile!"
