Make up two-word rhymes for things you see in your home, like “briight light” or “pretty kitty.” It’s okay if the rhymes are silly, like “hug rug” or “more floor.”
Children love to play with words and try out the different sounds of language. Encourage this! Oral language skills and phonological awareness are important for children learning to read. Ask your child if she can rhyme more than two words, like “rug, bug, hug.”
