What's That Word

For kindergartners who need practice with comprehension.

Teacher readingBefore reading a new book with kindergarteners, look for any words in the book that may be new to the children. Create a list of words that you feel is important to understanding the book. Introduce the words to the children in writing, asking if anyone can read the words or has seen them before. Pronounce the words and ask for definitions. Review the spelling of the words, noting any interesting spelling patterns, and remind children of other words you have talked about that follow those patterns. Focus on children's prior knowledge and background.

Ask children to listen for the words you have discussed while you read. Afterwards, ask them how the words they had learned earlier were used in the book and to point out where in the book they were used. Make word cards that can be kept tucked in the front cover of the book or attached to a key ring so they can be reviewed as the book is reread. Children who are comfortable with this practice often will ask that additional words be added to the list!
