Paul Embry is a tutor in the GED preparation class in Louisville, Kentucky.

"I do it all - reading, math, science, geography, and civics. I enjoy the challenge of trying to figure out how to get through to each student because certain curricula fit some students; others do not. When I see the light bulb go on, well, it just doesn’t get much better than that!It is also rewarding to have former students drop in to visit. I can see that they are doing well; their self-confidence is so evident.

I became interested in becoming a volunteer after watching a television news magazine program. They had a story on adults going through an adult literacy program and the thought that so many adults in the U.S.today can’t read stayed with me. So, I did some research on my own, and learned that over 27% of the adults right here in Jefferson County cannot read sufficiently well. Being able to read has brought me so much joy and knowledge. Realizing that others are unable to read just seemed so unfair!

I can see that I am helping people help themselves. They have made the decision to come back to school, so they are motivated to learn. One young mother told me that she could no longer help her children with their homework. So, helping her will have a ripple effect. She will be able to help further her children’s education. All of my students have been successful in their own way. By helping them further their education, I help empower them to find a career and become more self-sufficient. In the long run, I am helping my community.

It’s a most rewarding experience when I help a student, and see that student advance to the next level. I realize that what I am doing is making a difference. If you are considering volunteering, your heart and mind is in the right place. Once you volunteer, you will be surprised that you receive as much out of it as your students do."
