Being part of family literacy has helped my daughter and me in so many ways. It touches so many parts of our lives!

Richelle Treves volunteers in an English as a second language (ESL) class in Louisville, Kentucky.

"I wanted to learn Spanish, and I knew that I would have to practice it to become proficient. So, I volunteered to work in an ESL program so that I could practice my Spanish. During class time, I help adult learners understand their lessons. I clarify assignments and help them practice their English. Then, during break, I get to converse with them in Spanish. It’s a win-win situation!

I just love my work here! I love helping people! It’s so rewarding when a student will finally say something in English that they didn’t think they could. On the downside, though, it’s hard when they move on to a higher level class. We form a bond, then I have to let them fly away!

I think that having a literate population is a worthy goal to work toward. Literacy helps everyone. The adult learners I work with gut pigs in the slaughter house for a living. Some were professionals in their home country before they came here, yet here they have to work at the worst jobs imaginable. Through my volunteering, I hope to help them move onto a better job.

In December, we had an end-of-the-year celebration. It was truly special. Some students brought potluck for the class. Others performed in the talent show. It was so much fun to listen to the students reading their poems. They made me feel special by getting me to join in the ethnic dances. I got to be a part of the celebration!

I highly recommend volunteering! Just do it! Open your hearts and minds and volunteer. I know I get more out of it than I probably give."
