Donna wanted to learn how to read and write for many years, but keptputting it off. She learned how to muddle through life while readingand writing like a fourth-grader, but she could tell her lack of skillwas holding her back from achieving her dream of starting her owntranscription business. "I knew something was wrong," she recalls."Eventually I would need another job and I just couldn't pull it off."
One day, Donna saw an ad on television. But she didn't have a pen andpencil handy, so she had to wait another couple of months, hoping thead might reappear. Finally the toll-free number was broadcast again. This time she was ready. She called the number and was referred fortutoring at a ProLiteracy affiliate close to her home.
Quite a bit haschanged in Donna's life since she met her tutor. She has become aregular contributor to a literacy newsletter and won a state writingcontest. She went from being a person who hated parties to a person wholoves to socialize. She has even had the courage to stand up and speakin public, which may come in handy now that she is a member of theStudent Advisory Council for Proliteracy Worldwide. Donna is a featuredstudent in "Unleashing Potential through Multi-IntelligentInstruction", a Thinkfinity Literacy Network online course at: http://literacynetwork.verizon.org/Free-Online-Courses.21.0.html [1]To learn more about Donna and to hear her story, go to: www.proliteracy.org/students/profiles_d-jones.asp [2]
